02How Each One Actually Works

The PTFE liner is a low-friction material bonded to the inside of the race. As the ball articulates, the liner transfers a microscopic film of PTFE onto it, lubricating the joint from within. There is no reservoir to top up and nothing to schedule; the liner is the lubricant. That is also why its life is finite — when the liner is worn, the joint is done.

The greased joint keeps a film of grease between two metal surfaces (or steel on a bronze race). The grease carries load, cushions shock and can flush debris out when you pump fresh grease in. The trade is obvious: someone has to pump that grease, at the right interval, for the life of the machine.

One consequence people miss: because PTFE insulates metal from metal, a lined rod end runs noticeably quieter. Where noise, vibration and harshness matter, the liner is doing a second job beyond lubrication.

04The Load-Rating Myth: "Greased" Does Not Mean "Stronger"

Here is the point most buyers get backward. It is easy to assume a grease-fed metal rod end is the "heavy-duty" one and therefore carries more load. Often it is the opposite.

To add a grease nipple, you drill a hole through the body of the rod end. That hole removes material that was carrying load, so a greasable rod end frequently has a lower rating than the same-size sealed part. As a rough hierarchy for a given size: solid metal-to-metal ends (no hole) tend to sit highest, PTFE-lined in the middle, and drilled greasable ends lowest.

Where greasable genuinely wins is not raw static rating but shock and alternating loads: the grease film absorbs impact that would hammer a dry joint. 05The Honest Failure Modes

Both types fail in predictable ways, and knowing them prevents most bad calls.

Maintenance-free. Its service life is the liner's life — you cannot re-lubricate or rebuild it. Overload it, run it in grit, or exceed its temperature range and the liner wears early, with no way to nurse it back. And a field mistake worth flagging: never pump grease into a PTFE-lined rod end. Grease interferes with the self-lubricating surface and attracts abrasive dust, quietly destroying the part you paid a premium for.

Greased. Its whole advantage depends on being greased. A greasable joint on a machine nobody services fails faster than a maintenance-free one would have — the honest failure mode is the grease nipple no one ever touches. Before you specify greasable, be sure the schedule is real.

Rule of thumb Maintenance-free is only "free" for the bearing's own life. Greasable is only "long-life" if it is actually greased. Match the type to your maintenance reality, not the brochure.
