Thread hand decides how the rod end moves on its mating thread. An opposed pair can also turn a fixed linkage into an in-place adjuster.
Use a right-hand thread for a conventional single-end connection. Use a left-hand thread when the mating component requires it or when the linkage is designed with opposed threads. Pairing one right-hand and one left-hand rod end allows a center tube or adjuster to change linkage length while both ends remain connected. Thread hand is separate from male or female form, diameter, pitch, bore, liner and load rating.
A request for an "M12 rod end" is incomplete. M12 gives a nominal thread diameter, but it does not state pitch, hand, male or female connection, or the bearing bore. The wrong hand is especially easy to miss because a left-hand and right-hand part may look similar in a product photo.
1. The basic difference is the thread helix
This is the conventional thread hand used in most general assemblies. It mates with a right-hand tapped hole or right-hand nut of the same diameter and pitch.
The helix runs in the opposite direction. It requires a left-hand mating thread and a left-hand locknut with the same diameter and pitch.
The bearing head does the same job in either case. It carries the spherical bearing element and permits angular movement. Thread hand changes how the shank or body joins the linkage; it does not turn the rod end into a different bearing type.
2. Why adjustable linkages use one of each
With a right-hand rod end at one end and a left-hand rod end at the other, rotating the center tube moves both rod ends relative to the tube. This changes effective linkage length without disconnecting either end. High Performance Academy describes the same opposed-thread arrangement for adjustable suspension links, but the principle applies to any linkage designed around a central adjuster.
This arrangement is useful where an operator must set length, alignment or preload during assembly and then secure the adjustment with locknuts. The drawing still has to control the usable thread engagement, the adjustment range and the final center-to-center length.
- Use mating threads and locknuts that match the hand at each end.
- Keep the diameter and pitch callouts explicit on both sides of the drawing.
- Mark the left-hand end so maintenance staff can identify it after installation.
- Lock the final position using the method specified by the equipment designer.
3. Identify the thread hand from documentation first
The part number and drawing are more reliable than appearance. A production drawing should state the thread completely, for example M12 x 1.75 RH or M12 x 1.75 LH. If the company uses a model suffix, keep the suffix and the full thread callout together on the purchase document.
- Read the complete part number. Do not assume that every manufacturer places the left-hand marker in the same position.
- Check the drawing callout. Confirm diameter, pitch, hand and tolerance class where the drawing provides it.
- Match the nut or tapped component. The mating thread must agree on all four fields, not just nominal diameter.
- Verify the assembled adjustment direction. Make this check before paint marks, locking compounds or final torque make correction harder.
4. How Dongzhou marks left-hand variants
Dongzhou's current SI-TK, SA-TK and POS product pages instruct buyers to add L for a left-hand thread. The same pages use FG for a fine-pitch option. These suffixes describe different properties, so one must not be substituted for the other.

Fine pitch is a separate choice. For example, the live SI-TK table lists SI 10 T/K with M10 x 1.5 and SI 10 T/KFG with M10 x 1.25. The website does not publish an example that establishes how every combined left-hand and fine-pitch suffix should be ordered. Ask Dongzhou to confirm the exact part-number syntax instead of constructing it from memory.
5. Male, female, right-hand and left-hand are four combinations
Two independent questions define the connection. First, is the rod end male or female? Second, is the thread right-hand or left-hand? The answer to one does not determine the other.

6. Specification errors that reach the factory
- The RFQ says only "M12". The supplier still does not know pitch, hand, connection form or bearing bore.
- The rod end is left-hand but the locknut is right-hand. The parts cannot assemble even though both packages say M12.
- The buyer treats L and FG as alternatives. L identifies thread hand on the listed Dongzhou pages; FG identifies a listed fine-pitch variant.
- The team copies another brand's suffix. Designation systems are manufacturer-specific. Translate the old number into a full drawing callout.
- The hand is inferred from a photograph. Lighting and viewing angle make that unreliable, especially on internal threads.
- The drawing omits the adjustment range. A left/right pair is useful only when the tube, engagement length and locknuts are designed around the required movement.
7. What Dongzhou needs for a thread-hand review
Start with the complete connection rather than a loose model name. Dongzhou's current product pages list left-hand options for SI-TK, SA-TK and POS, while the company page states that non-standard products can be developed from drawings or samples.
